The Family Tree March 3rd, 2019

Millions of monarch butterflies overwinter in Mexico every year as part of the furthest butterfly migration on the planet. Each fall, they arrive to one of a few specific groups of trees where their great, great grandparent overwintered one year earlier. Huddling together on the oldest Douglas Fir trees they can find, they absorb the trees heat to stay alive. The importance of these old trees cannot be stressed enough as each year, they fall victim to black-market logging, fetching a high price as timber.
