Walking in smoke is less glamorous than it seems, so to make my 200 km march pass as quickly as possible I had to set firm goals. Realizing I could walk 5 km/h and that I usually needed a break after two hours I planned to stomp out five 10 km legs per day with on hour breaks for recovery. This meant I'd have 14 hours on the road and that because it was unsafe to walk in the dark I'd have to begin at 6:00 am to complete by 8:00 pm. On day two I switched to 15 km for the first two legs, thereby eliminating one of the breaks and one hour from the day.
