Dirty Dog August 21st, 2018

After several weeks of living alone in the alpine, the kind of judgment I receive when walking into a grocery store is so thick you could cut it with a knife. Upon restocking with food in the town of McBride I was walking back towards the McBride Peak trailhead when I was greeted by this gnarly looking dog. At first I pretended not to notice him, hoping he would just go away ..but after a while I felt bad for him and chose to pat his head. He melted on the ground like a pound of butter and I could feel how starved he was for human affection. In that moment, it struck me that I had treated him like other people had been treating me and, without language, we formed a special kind of bond. He then escorted me for the next 12 km through the dusk and dark, almost all the way to the summit, running ahead to make sure the path was clear of bears and cougars.
