In rural Malawi, carrying a child, either in the belly or on the back, or both, is synonymous with womanhood. Many girls look forward to having their first child from a very young age with the feeling that becoming a mother will earn them the respect they long for.

This young girl runs out to the road to greet me every time I walk by, often carrying a tiny human on her back. :) B
