These days I've been pushing my comfort zones to the max in preparation for some major flights I have planned for the Canadian summer. And while it's getting easier and easier to fly deep into the back-country, I've also had to increase the safety margin's I'm willing to accept when it comes to scratching low in valleys, hoping to find boost to get me home.
The other day I got myself into a situation where a valley was much windier than I'd thought and the thermic lift was too disconnected for me to make sense of. As I sunk lower and lower I noticed the wind becoming stronger and, somehow, without thought I chose to land high on a terrace I'd found and walk down to the valley below.
When I did I realized the wind was compressing in the narrow valley and blowing so hard that, had I tried to save time by landing near the road, I would have certainly been flying backwards and in dangerously turbulent conditions. I feel fortunate to have made this call and hope that I will continue to flow in this type of choice making as I go about my forthcoming adventures.
Fly safe friends! <3 B
